The Cynics Guide to Sustainability
Leveraging current eco-mania to drive better business processes
Green. Sustainability. Carbon Footprints. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Yeah, we’ve heard it all and some of us are just plain sick of it. Do we really need to do these things? Hey, from a business standpoint, the goal is to make money, right?
It's Not Easy Being Green--Just Ask Kermit
“It’s not easy being green.” When this tune started floating around my head for this post, I thought Kermit the Frog had first sung these words about twenty years ago. Imagine my surprise when I checked Wikipedia and found out the song is really almost forty years old. And what was once a frog’s simple lament about growing comfortable in his own somewhat hunter green skin, has over the years been co-opted by the green movement as a reminder of the difficulties of living green with Kermit’s blessing of course.
Green is the New Green
Bleeding heart that I am it definitely warms my soul to see the number of banks and financial institutions that are turning green. Some, like Citigroup and now Deutsche Bank are leading the charge. But since no one has ever said that business is compassionate or even particularly altruistic, the little realist sitting on my shoulder recognises that these organisations are not driven by purely selfless reasons. But neither are most of us.
Developing a ‘Green’ Multi-Modal Logistics Network
Over the past few years there has been a lot of ideas from the car manufacturers on how they can produce more environmentally friendly cars. In the last year alone, nearly every car manufacturer has shown some form of hybrid or electric vehicle design, but what are the truck, bus and rail companies doing to develop more environmentally friendly vehicles?
The ‘Green’ Supply Chain, it’s coming, much sooner than you think.....
Over the last few years the ‘Green Movement’ has been gaining considerable momentum, what started out as news reports concerning holes in the ozone layer has now manifested it’s way into every part of our lives. It was photos such as the one below (showing polar bears on a melting iceberg in the arctic) which were distributed via TV, newspapers, magazines and the internet which made people take a step back and finally think about what they would need to do in their lives in order to join the so called green revolution.
Eco-Friendly = ECOnomically and ECOlogically Friendly
With the economy in the tank, the first thought amongst many companies is to tighten the belt, slash employees, reduce their spending and pray for things to pass quickly. First to go may be business initiatives that some see as “nice to haves”. Pursuit of eco-friendly initiatives beyond what is required by government or customer mandates may be seen as one of those. Noble goals often find little purchase in hard times. Research seems to suggest that following a slash-and-burn mentality might just make your life more difficult.
